Date and place of birth: 28.01.1934, Reutlingen, Baden-Württemberg

Marital status: married (1959) 3 children

Education:

1953 – 1957: Study of Forest Science in Freiburg in Breisgau and in Munich with practical training periods at the forest inspection in Calmbach, Balingen, Mochenwangen and in Sweden (at the Graningeverkens AB).

1961 – 1963: Research studies at the Institute for Forest Botany of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich; Graduation to doctor oec. publ.; suma cum laude.

1957 – 1960: Administrative training at the forest inspection in Riedlingen, Metzingen, Wildbad and Kandern and 2. State examinations.

1969: Habilitation at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Freiburg on the speciality of Forest Sciences.

Professional activities:

1963 – 1970: member of the forestry direction Südwürttemberg/Hohenzollern in Tübingen and at the Ministry for Nutrition, Agriculture, Wine-growing and forests in Stuttgart; expert adviser responsible for the subjects of regional planning, land use planning, landscape and recreation planning.

1969 – 1976: lectureship at the Faculty of Forestry on the subjects of landscape and recreation planning.

1970 – 1976: Director of the forest district in Reutlingen and at the same time delegate for nature conservation for the county of Reutlingen.

since 1976: appointement to the chair of Landscape Technique (1992 renamed to "Institute for Land Use Planning and Nature Conservation") at the Faculty of Forest Sciences at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.

1983-1985 and 1993-1995: Dean of the Faculty of Forest Sciences.

1978: appointment to the German Council for Landscape maintenance.

since 1988: member of the Bavarian Court for Nature Conservation.

since 1991: chairman of the Scientific Board of the Academy for Rural Development.

Research Priorities:

Supervisor of the Partial Project 5: Field specroscopic measurements for the approximation of the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) of heterogeneous agricultural plots
